To call or not to call

To call or not to call

So, I was talking to a new patient and, upon asking how long their pain had been present, the vague reply was an embarrassed "Few months"...

Followed by "Maybe a year...?" gazing at me like I had the answer to that question.

In these cases I like to break into one of my favorite expressions with my best Cantonese accent "Wahhh! Sucha long time!"

But really I'm thinking "Why wait so long before seeing someone?"

And - sorry guys - but it's usually the men. Women are generally more proactive when it comes to getting stuff sorted. Fact.

One of the Principles of Osteopathy states that the body possesses innate healing mechanisms, and it's true: our bodies were designed by nature to self regulate, fight infections and repair damage.

Therefore I'm definitely not suggesting you call for help if you feel a twinge at your left ear lobe. In most cases the body will deal with it.

But if you had a weird pain or a physical discomfort for a couple of weeks and it's not getting any better, you probably should have it checked out.

This is why:

One of my professors at uni once stated: "The body is smart, but not as smart as it thinks it is". Great quote. But what does it actually mean?

It means our body is able to heal and adapt successfully to a lot of the weird things that we do to it - run ultramarathons, jump from planes, eat 25 burgers in one go - but sometimes instead of making a tight muscle relax or releasing a joint that got stiff it prefers to compensate around that, making another muscle or another joint take on the increased workload.

And we start moving awkwardly or even develop pain.

Such pain may start as a niggle, but the more you ignore it.. guess what? The more the body will compensate, until, if left enough time, the niggle will become a more persistent pain.

The problem with these niggles is: you can ignore them.

Well, at least initially.

Then a few months (or a year!) down the line you're looking at me wondering "Has it been that long?!?".

These cases take a bit longer to treat because your osteopath needs to unwind the compensatory patterns the body "smartly" employed to keep you functioning all that time.

Paradoxically, the extreme pains you think you'd never survive from resolve much faster because you're more likely to see your osteopath about it immediately.

So if something doesn't feel right, listen to your body's cry for help and get yourself checked.
